Officer Of The Year South Carolina Highway Patrol Officer Joseph Ragazzo
accepts the award from Coastal Carolina Shields President Michael Grabarz
On February 6, 2018 the Coastal Carolina Shields held its Officer of the Year ceremony honoring Lance Corporal Joseph Ragazzo of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The award was presented for the following action:
On October 13, 2017 Lance Corporal Joseph Ragazzo was called to the scene of a suspected DUI by an Officer of Georgetown County. He met the Officer near Brookgreen gardens on Ocean Highway 17 to perform a sobriety test. Officer Ragazzo positioned his cruiser to create a safety barrier that protected the DUI suspect. While performing the DUI test another vehicle southbound swerved towards him at an estimated speed of 60 MPH. Lance Corporal Ragazzo was stuck and thrown approximately thirty feet. He sustained life threating injuries and was transported to Grand Strand hospital. He is currently recuperating at home and is working toward returning to full duty with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
For his actions on that night Lance Corporal Joseph Ragazzo was presented with the Coastal Carolina Shields Officer of the Year award for 2018.
